Musikmotion episode 6 takes us to the heart of our exploration of music and moving imagery with musician, composer and sound artist Ben Frost.
Best known in the world of soundtracks for his score to Netflix’s Dark, Ben started as a visual artist finding his way to a music style that’s been described as minimalist, instrumental and experimental, with influences ranging from classical minimalism to punk rock and black metal that shape-shifts physical power with immersive melodic minimalism and rupturing metal. He’s also well regarded for his albums Theory of Machines, By the Throat and hyper immersive live sets.
Ben’s work pushes boundaries of music and picture across many visual and dramatic mediums. Other TV work includes Fortitude, Ridley Scott’s Raised by Wolves and Netflix’s upcoming 1899. He’s scored the films Sleeping Beauty, The Deep and Super Dark Times and co-created music for the video game Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. A long-running partnership with photographer/artist Richard Mosse brought the music and sound design of installation pieces The Enclave and Incoming while he has just shown his own sonic art piece 6×15 at Post Apocalyptic Renaissance in Palermo. He’s collaborated with contemporary dance companies Chunky Move, the Icelandic Dance Company and the British choreographer Wayne McGregor and composed and directed two operas: The Wasp Factory and The Murder of Halit Yozgat.
Ben co-composed music for a new imagining of Solaris with Daniel Bjarnsson and frequently collaborates on music projects with Nico Muhly, Valgeir Sigurðsson,Björk, Tim Hecker, Colin Stetson, Daníel Bjarnason, and American rock band Swans.
The breadth of Ben Frost’s work, the visual mediums he engages with and the many collaborations he stokes are so deep and prolific this should be our deepest dive yet into the wider universe of music and images.
